Fighter’s History Dynamite

Fighter's History Dynamite

Fighter’s History Dynamite aka Karnov’s Revenge was developed by Data East and released for the arcades March 17, 1994. The original game Fighter’s History had 6 buttons just like Street Fighter but they changed hardware to MVS after Capcom’s failed lawsuit against Data East. Bringing it down to 4 buttons which actually works out better for the title. Eleven character’s returned from Fighter’s History but with Clown and Karnov now being playable. Karnov was given new sprites. Also they added two new characters Yungmei and Zazie. Data East chose to go with Karnov’s Revenge over Fighter’s History Dynamite for the international title because of the cult popularity of Karnov.

Fighter’s History Dynamite is a crazy ass game. Very exciting, fast and “Broken”.  Characters have weak points, these certain areas you can hit and then an article of clothing or item on the opponents person will start flashing then if hit again they will be stunned and sustain more damage. 1.5x Damage modifier is in place when a character is hit on the weak point. This leads to some very hard hitting combos.  When a character is below 25% health, damage is reduced 50% on normal attacks but special moves and throws are unaffected.

Normals can be chained into each other and canceled into a special moves. There are is no juggle system. Every character has backdash. If you have a air special you can cancel a jumping normal into it.

Fighter’s History Dynamite/Fighter’s History could be considered one of the first fighting games with a cross over/guest fighter. That being Karnov.  It’s possible if this series kept going the Bad Dudes could have made an appearance since Karnov appeared in their game as well. The Ox from Data East’s Karate Champ also makes an appearance.

Every character except Marstorius, Zazie, and Yungmie speaks in their native dialect. Very impressive for the time.

Unique mechanics,

  • Weak points
  • Light attacks chaining into hard attacks with ease
  • Stand or duck during combos to control where you are getting hit
